HB 4474 Violates Free Speech

We have an urgent request. Your representatives are discussing a very important bill (HB 4474 and HB 4475) making it a felony to cause anyone to feel “frightened” based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

This is a hate speech law targeted at churches and religious people most of all but the vague wording in this bill will lead to more – not less – hate speech. It provides criminal penalties against those who don’t know which words are okay and which are not. This is a violation of our rights as Americans to due process of the law. Only speech “for a legitimate purpose” would be protected, but nowhere does the bill define what that means.
